An Open Letter to My Daughter: Why it Matters

Baby K,

I’ve been thinking a lot about it – about why I have been putting so much emphasis on the fact that you are genetically a female. My little girl. Why is that? I’ve always considered myself open and welcoming to all types of people. So why now do I bother to be excited about you being born a girl? 

After some reflecting on the matter, I’ve decided it’s because it’s all I really know about you. The three things I get to know about you right now: You’re half mommy. You’re half daddy. You’re born a girl. That’s it. 

But I want to know everything about you. What color are your eyes? Do they sparkle when you smile? What are your innate strengths? Will you be more introverted like your daddy or more extraverted like your mommy? Will you be more right-brained like your daddy or more left-brained like your mommy? Will you be more organized like your daddy or more organized-chaos like your mommy? There is so much about you that I can’t wait to meet. 

So don’t be confused, your mommy loves you no matter what you are and who you choose to be. But if you should be anything in this world, just be kind, be generous. Be loving, be caring. Be persistent, be passionate. But most of all just be you.
